Has anyone used 6502EM for this? I was informed by the author of the app that Electron support was a bit on the crap side.

What I'd love is a port of ElectrEm. If my RISC OS coding skills were even slightly good, I'd have a bash.

Cos apart from a total of about 60 minutes of usage on a BBC at school, I've never really used one. I used an Electron for years and would just prefer to play Electron titles smile

Further explanation would require an indepth look into the intricacies of my obsessions. Let's not go there.

It seems odd that lots of platforms have Electron emulators (particularly ElectrEm), yet RISC OS doesn't - it would be nice for it to join the party!

Do you have experience of Electron emulation using 6502em? I was told by the author (as I said above) that the Electron emulation wasn't anywhere near as good as the BBC emulation. Which is why I'd love to see Electrem ported...

If you could try a smattering of Electron games, I'd be grateful. Citadel, Elite, Overdrive, E-Type and Joe Blade all might be good tests! smile

Anybody got a clue on the copyright status of old Electron games? I've got one or two ADFs floating around, but I have no idea which ones would still be protected, or even if there is a specific provision ruling out the Electron ones (since they're so old).

Technically, they'll still be protected by copyright - the specifics (ie who owns the rights) are going to vary according to the games in question, obviously.

Practically, I seriously doubt anyone is going to be too bothered about protecting their interests on software for an old 8bit computer. Life's too short, and anyone who is worried ought to get their head out of their butt.

(And this is coming from me, Mr Fussy-about-copyrights).

That's the problem with the Acorn scene - too much infighting about who owns what, Castle vs ROL, etc. Just like the USA, it's had its historty of bad prece(si)dents :-(

Well, while the games are maybe a bit dubious, I'm sure it's alright to share magazine cover tape images. Here's some you might find interesting:

Acorn User, Electron Computing, Electron User tape images can be found here (UEF format).

A more detailed archive of Electron User tapes and accompanying magazine summaries can be found here (SSD, DSD, ADM; for info, view the TXT).

Please note that my HTTP server isn't always on, but it can generally be found during daylight hours (approximately 7am-9pm UK time).

That's the problem with the Acorn scene
To clarify, I was talking about games for the old 8bit platforms in general, not specific to Acorn hardware or the Acorn scene. Despite the interest in 'retro' computing, when the sun goes down, there won't be many people willing to shell out money on games for machines that are ancient history in the IT world. The lost revenue might be enough for a pint, if that.

And I'm not being a hypocrite in this case: One of my early games was for the Beeb (I don't think I made an Elk version) and I don't care if that version of that game is passed around. (Not that it's likely to happen - I don't think I sold more than a handful of copies).

I don't want to open that can of worms and start yet another long "discussion" of it here, but I have to comment because you've brought it up in response to my comments that were made with a specific context in mind. So, my opinion is this:

It's very much a debacle from someone sitting outwith the two companies - but the bottom line is that one of the two companies is trampling all over the rights of the other, and possibly they're both doing it.

Personally, I think they should sort things out once and for all, be that by dragging each other through the courts, or just by sitting down and negotiating some mutually suitable terms (and then sticking to them). I don't care, as long as they do so quietly, and just tell the world when it's sorted.

Whenever public mention of the blasted mess is made, it always leads to stupid arguments between people who either don't have a clue as to the truth of the matter, or if they do it's because they have deep ties with one side or the other and therefore (a) are commenting with bias and (b) should keep their mouths shut. (Blunt, but true).

And that's what pisses me off more about it than anything else. It's those pointless squables that make it so much worse, especially from the point of view of anyone looking in on the 'scene'.

Okay I'll have a look. The main problem I can foresee is with UEF images that aren't available on disk for the Elk.

Okay checked them all (Screenshots below). The only one I had problems with was Elite. It loaded but the functions keys didn't work (not sure how the Elk version control operated).

I tried the basic versions - apparently there are other ones but the codes on the archive site didn't make sense: "RR", "HQ" etc.

To run them you need to unzip the zip then the file inside, set the resulting file to &BBC (BBC snap), double click and you're away. You can load most tape UEF games at high-speed.

So considering you get a full BBC emulator with infinite hard disc space as I say well worth the download in my view.

Thanks for trying them Andrew. I guessed they'd run, I was more concerned of how well they would - but I assume they ran at the proper speed with no graphical glitches etc? This is good news smile

Pleasure smile The tyres on Overdrive seemed to flicker although I was maybe running the emulator at fast speed to hasten tape loading. PErsonally I've had no problems with speed on 6502 or Beebit AFAICR since using 6502 on the A3010. So StrongARM, A9 or Iyonix should be fine.
