What are your opinions on the dangers (or not) or using a phone behind the wheel?People who use a mobile phone while driving are four times more likely to have an accident. What's more, the UK Government is spending £250,000 on an ad campaign starting tomorrow in which it will tell you in no uncertain terms that using a mobile while driving is a strict no-no. According to the Government spin machine, drivers get distracted when they use a phone increasing the chances of an accident. "Missing a call won't kill you," said Mr Jamieson, "an accident quite possibly could." In March, boffins at the Transport Research Laboratory in Berkshire found that using a mobile phone while driving was more dangerous than being drunk behind the wheel. http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/59/25180.html Anyone got any personal experiences, or strong opinions? |

I can't drive (never bothered to learn - never needed to either), but if I did I wouldn't dream of using my mobile while driving. I'd turn it off and if anyone needed to speak to me, they'd have to leave a message and wait until I've finished. To do anything else is just bloody stupid, to be honest (and blunt). |

*Like mistaking the handbrake for the gear stick. At speed. On the main roundabout in the middle of town. And also, failing to notice a bloody great bus-sized Range Rover pull out of a side street. It was bright red. I was about 6" away from it. I didn't see it. ooops, Insurance Company must have loved the bill for that I missed it, but by sheer luck, not judgement. |

Anyway, I drink too much when I'm at parties. I'm dead dangerous, yes indeedy.
Yes, so I've been told! I hear that you're like a loaded 'gun' and when you've been drinking you tend to shoot without warning. Messy. |

Actually, could you all say whether or not you drive when you reply to this thread. I'm just curious. So, what about if you've got an automatic gearbox and power steering...? |

ooops, Insurance Company must have loved the bill for that Now, now, he didn't actually mention hitting anything there... Subtle as an air-raid, sneaks back on-topic: I've noticed that a lot of people here don't drive (and some don't have mobiles, or drink... but that's another story). Which all correlates nicely with the general anti-talk-driving opinion too. It seems that people who do drive, and have mobiles, tend (generalisation!) to be a little more liberal on the subject. There are a lot of factors to be taken into account. For example, if someone was using a hands-free kit, in an automatic car with power steering (i.e. can be driven relatively safely with one hand), would you have a problem with that?

yes its still using a phone and concentrating on talking rather than driving Hmmm... I have to say I agree - mainly because once when I was talking on the phone, I walked into a lamp-post. Maybe I shouldn't drive full stop

I think it's unsafe. And I can't drive (Currently have no need/desire to), and don't have a mobile phone (No need/desire). And I don't drink or smoke. How cool am I? |

WOMEN! They do it all the bldy time. They get pissed and think people (usually ex-boyfirneds, but also current other-halves) want to listen to the ramble on! It's bad enough when they're sober. Why? Do you know men that do this? Do YOU do it? We are SO off topic. I still want people's opinions on the safety of chatting on a phone whilst driving (and if you drive or not). |
