Quick and, indeed, dirty: Thats quite nice. I just wish I could reproduce the colour and texture of the original, while cleaning up some of the bumps and imperfections. |

Needs fangs. Definitely.
Plus I need to fix the colours - the sides and top of the body are different to the sides and top of the face.
Plus, texturing of the back. ________ Cheers, Rich.

Needs fangs. Definitely. Aa aa aaah! alligators don't have visible teeth. Or something. Its meant to be friendly, anyway...

Plus, texturing of the back. Perhaps the following huge images may be useful, if you want to do a proper job (so I don't have to)... |

v2.0 - with colours changed, bumps and "texture" added, and teeth. I still think he looks friendly.
Don't forget that logos should be kept as simple as possible - those textures are pushing it detail-wise for en-small-enating the image. I've even changed the lines slightly from the real thing to keep the spacing a bit more even. ________ Cheers, Rich.

Also, alligators have invisible teeth?! That's gonna haunt my dreams tonight. |

Also, alligators have invisible teeth?! That's gonna haunt my dreams tonight. Actually, to spoil my own weak joke, I was taught as a nipper that with its mouth closed, a crocodile's upper and lower gnashers are visible, whereas alligators only display their top set. A very cursory google images search seems to confirm this. |

I only drew a top set, so that's alright! Although it was more to do with space in the image. ________ Cheers, Rich.

I've tweaked it a little, hope you don't mind! The teeth are a little whiter (by making the line thinner), the dark green a little less dark, the top edge is wiggled a little (as are a few other lines), I added another row of scales, etc.
I'm not sure whether I prefer the legs like they are now or more pod-like as in the original.
Is that d94 filetype artworks or what? I should have looked at it when I was on my RPC, but didn't have it then.
...Hey, why has your .aff file got a drawfile icon, while mine is some sort of generic binary icon?

I've tweaked it a little, hope you don't mind! Nope, tweak away!
The teeth are a little whiter (by making the line thinner) So the teeth stay? Yay!
I added another row of scales, etc. Yes, there was a definite conflict between keeping it close to the original, and "improving" it. I changed some of the angles, but kept the original number of lines; it looks better with more.
I'm not sure whether I prefer the legs like they are now or more pod-like as in the original. That was one of the things that I preferred "improved". I didn't make them hyper-real, but the blobs just didn't work for me.
Is that d94 filetype artworks or what? I should have looked at it when I was on my RPC, but didn't have it then. Yes, it's ArtWorks, with transparency to make the scales more subtle. Xara (which is what I was using on this laptop) outputs ArtWorks EPS, which is what I then used to output as Draw.
...Hey, why has your .aff file got a drawfile icon, while mine is some sort of generic binary icon? Because we're both using browsers that don't understand application/drawfile as a mime type, but only one of us has direct access to the DB? ________ Cheers, Rich.

Bump!
After a couple of years of sitting around in an almost-finished state, Genogator is at it's first public release version.
You can have a look here: Genogator.
If you want to play with it you'll need an annotated sequence. Some good ones are: AJ877225 AM157767 BN000925 These are all plasmids I've been involved with, but it should work for any EMBL format annotated nucleotide sequence. Type one of those into the accession number fetch box, and choose a basic starting parameter file further down the page, then press the generate button. This will give you a starting image which you could tweak to perfection if you were using it seriously. But if you do want to do anything more, you'll have to read the copious instructions.
I'm posting this partly to say thanks for the help, and also partly to get the site into Google - until now it's not been linked to from anywhere.
