Exodus is utterly amazing. It all comes together to be far greater than the sum of its parts. I took great delight when a Lord went back on his word - because then I systematically went through and destroyed his entire empire as revenge...
Probably the best RISC OS game I've ever played - and I'm not usually into that kind of game at all. |

Whether I offend another Lord or not they still try to take over. As I recall, there was a pattern to the lords which I eventually learned (and have since forgotten). Some of them could be trusted, pretty much regardless, and some of them were extremely unreliable. This was a consistent thing, I guess it must have been hard-coded in. Exodus was a good game, I should play it again sometime Played it last night, funnily enough.
Any lord will attack an undefended planet, although some are less likely to if you're allied with them (but not always). The Teri usually make the best allies, and are more likely to forgive you if you ask, the Gordoon never accept alliances (although they occasionally offer them), the Yo'Kon are a bit random about them, and the Urkash tend to be aggressive whatever happens. I've never noticed if individuals within a species have slightly different hardcoded behaviour.
You should be able to take over one other planet in the same system as you start almost straight away, with a fairly safe chance of not being counterattacked, which is a good move.
All settings are doable, but some are harder than others. IMO a small galaxy is best for the Might goal, simply because you don't have to spend ages tracking everyone down, but it's a bit of a nuisance for the others.
The bit about finding new species depends on your science budget. You're not going to get them unless you spend a lot on science or have a good science officer (the only one I ever bother changing is the general).
If you've got enough cash to get a lunar base on your planet early on it'll be pretty well invulnerable at that stage, but you'll still get attacked if you leave hardly any other units there because the other lords don't seem to pay any attention to the base when making their decision to attack. You might mangle their army easily, but repeated attacks upset the population, and some (not Teri) might try bombing you if they lose. |

What? That expensive when the technodream CD is 6 pounds? I'm sorry, I'm not paying for that game again! Could someone give me an ADF?
Andrew, you mentioned acorn preservation and AU CDs, what are they? Sorry I don't mean Acorn preservation (www.acornpreservation.org) I mean Acorn Revival (acorn.revivialteam.de) AKA Wocki's Emulations Site.
The only problem with Wocki's site is the games are all ADFs so for RISC OS you have to use a program called !DImager and save onto floppy. However so many are so old that the only way to run them easily is through !a310em on RISC OS which takes ADFs as well as !applications.

AU CD is one of the Acorn User CDs that were released between 1994 and 2003. There was a games one that might have had Alderbaran on it. |

I don't recall Aldebaran being given away.
There was a copy of Acorn User with it on the cover though: http://www.acornuser.com/acornuser/year11/issue125.html |

I recall having seen several mags like those in my brother's room, but they all went down the plug with the rest.
Good news: I just bought my technodream nevryon CD. I just hope I'll have aldebaran back also, this way, i'll truly be able to remember that part of my childhood were I played that game and EPIC on my parent's PC. |

So what info must I give you (If I can, that is) for you to give me the ADF? Put simply, I need to make sure you've got the permission of the copyright holder for me to give you a copy, else I'd be breaking the law. |

Guile:Sadly I once experimented with a cruise control so I wouldn't have to worry about falling to the ground; I couldn't work out how to variate the thrust (to lose or gain altitude) and was consequently stuck when the tunnel sloped downwards. Menu button turns it off whilst held down. It makes beaming stuff on board hugely easier, especially when you're a bit overloaded. Also good for dodging rocks and maneouvring in confined areas. |

Guile is on my list of too-realistically-difficult games.
I owned Aldebaran too, but never really got into it. I liked flying around and into space, but couldn't be bothered with saving the plotuniverse. |

Going back to Exodus...
Any ideas why it refuses to do anything on VRPC (unless it's Adjust it doesn't like)? For some reason I can't fathom it doesn't realise it's an application directory (despite it being called !Exodus, containing the usual !boot, !sprites, !run etc., and everything else I've got working), and even then it hangs with a beep when I try to run it. I've just shoved it straight over from the Iyonix, where it works fine. What it's actually hanging on is a FontLibrary command in the !Run2 file. Is that something deprecated in Adjust but with half of it left in? |

Those problems sound vaguely familiar - presumably I tried running it on RedSquirrel at one time - but I can't remember whether I managed to solve them. |

I was suspecting it of being Adjust and not VRPC. I'm sure I've run it in the past on VRPC on 4.02. |

Hey guys, it's been a while but I found my aldebaran game again: It comes as a disk on which there is a craft much similar to the one in david braben's virus in green/yellow tones. The plot is about aliens invading the aldebaran system with a superweapon built on an asteroid called algol to turn the sun into a supernova. You can fight with your ship, the fastlight in sea, air and space and you gave to rescue professors sometimes (including one called professor appletree) to build a super weapon called the taurus rocket and to destroy algor's 3 reactors and blow this thing out of the sky.
Great elite like game.
Could somebody tell me how to ADF my disk?
Also, what is exodus? Where can I get it? |

Hmm, that rings no bells whatsoever.
Also, what is exodus? Where can I get it? Exodus is a fantastic game, but it's a turn-based strategy game, if you like those sort of things. It's well done and fun to play. I have a boxed copy lying around somewhere. |

We still sell standalone copies of Exodus I think (one or two in stock maybe) but the best way is to get the TEK 1608 game pack that we do containing all of Artex's games - Ankh, Exodus, Botkiller, Botkiller 2, TEK
Exodus came on a small mountain of discs originally, but the CD version should be plug-in-and-play! |

ah, yes, true: virus is called zarch on the archie. I only played the PC version (hence the name). Quite the other way round, actually: Zarch is called Virus on the PC. Since it was originally coded under RISC OS and later ported to Windows, and actually came as a crippled demo game with RO3, called Lander.
As for the Artex pack on offer: I never ever did get TEK working on my machine, but I seem to have been an isolated case; Botkiller 1 and 2 are fun to play if somewhat unchallenging; Exodus is of course brilliant; and I never actually played Ankh. However, if he's offering a good price, it looks like a pack well worth getting. |

Darn right it does. It's the player's ship (a Cobra Mk III) from Elite.
An SWI is a software interrupt - a code sent from the program to the processor to get something done, used on ARM platforms such as RISC OS. |

doesn't the elite player gets a prototype cobra mk IV? No such thing. As a longtime player of ArcElite (you don't want to know hooooooooow long...), I have categorised many things about it, taken screenshots of most of the rare ships that appear in the game, contributed to a number of FAQs and wiki entries (including my own complete comparative ship and object listing), and host my own ArcElite fan site. Trust me, there ain't no prototype Mk IV. I'm a sad freak who knows too much about an old classic

Ah, I see: two of a kind.
You might want to take a look then at a pc game called elite starfighter (from michael moltenthin) which is very good and was made out of arc elite: the author wanted to put the enphasis on this particularly.
enjoy. |

Can't believe there's no dredgers or generation ships in /any/ version of Elite I think they're planning to insert one into Oolite, there's a very active coding/design fanbase there. In the meantime, my imagination at work, greatly helped by painstaking pixel-by-pixel art under RO3.6:
You can see a generation ship being escorted by police Vipers. A similar generation ship being taken over by Thargoids. The Galacticy Navy masrhalling up for war. A witchspace dogfight between the Navy and the Thargoids (with the occasional Cobra doing bountyhunting. And finally, infamous pirate Zurid Pino enters the fray, on the side of the Thargoids of course.
It was a lot of fun drawing those. Did you know what they were partly inspired by the rumours in the game manual of a secret Navy base in Witchspace? Well, one really exists - hyperspace until you get a misjump and don't touch the mouse. Energy bomb the Thargoids or just outrun them, and keep interspacing until you get a mass lock (you often meet traders and pirates during this, just keep running straight). Eventually you'll come to a huge, abandoned space station
I once asked Ian Bell about this, and was told it's because an Witchspace jump is like a normal jump for the game, except that visually, the orientation radar and the sun/planet are missing - however, the station is still generated.

hello again,
I tried to make an aldebaran ADF using dlmager, but I can't even read the program on a PC, let alone make an ADF.
Can someone please recommend another program along with a way to make this ADF?
Thanks. |
