My post in this thread reminded me of the DS hacking scene. Has anyone here tried installing any interesting DS homebrew, such as DS IRC or the alternative DS firmwares that let you do snazzy stuff with your DS?

I had a go with a Wii on holiday!

Well, sort of. In Vienna there was this music/sound museum, and there was a virtual orchestra you could conduct by waving a rod around. Very much like Wii orchestra, except that if you got it wrong the lead violinist stood up and shouted at you in German, then stormed off.

I just caught three hercules beetles, two elephant beetles, and one goliath beetle - all from the same tree :o

[edit]

Make that two goliath beetles!

And a scarab beetle! (From another tree, though)

Which one? There's five main ones, although Mandarin and Catonese are the most popular. And then there's all the smaller ones, which number into the hundreds. Practically every valley has its own dialect!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/5209346.stm

Figures earlier this month showed that in 2005, Nintendo sold 2.6 million units of its handheld DS Lite and a further 1.3 million of the original DS.
They must be pleased, selling 2.6 million units in 2005 considering it was released in March 2006!

Sony sold less than a million of its PlayStation portable.
Ha-har! I'm not suprised, it's a bit pooey.

The good:
LocoRoco

It is teh shiney

Volume - the speakers are quite loud, enough to annoy someone in the next room who doesn't like Doctor Who. Sound quality is good on headphones too - much better than the DS.

The meh:
Web browser (competent, but awkward to use without a real keyboard - a problem with all mobile devices, really.)

Photo browser (not bad, but it would be easier to use if it preloaded the next image and automatically rotated portrait images to fit better on the screen)

The bad:
It's very fussy about movie formats, so all my avis and mpegs need re-encoding. Encoding an episode of Who takes about 2.5 hours on my Mac.

Upgrading to firmware 2.71 stopped my nicely encoded Dr Who videos from playing.

The interface. My sister, mother and father found it too awkward to use. A game controller isn't the best way of navigating menus at the best of times, and when you also have to say 'no, press cross, i think, no square... triangle!' all the time, it's obviously not a good design.

UMD discs. Horrible big, rattley things. The drive mechanism looks too fragile for me (I break stuff) and the discs are a bit slow spinning up and loading. I'm also concious that my minidisc player lasted a year and a bit before it started jumping and stuttering. Moving parts are bad in portable devices.

No case. OK, so I got the base pack, but even with a case I'd be very worried about taking it anywhere. A clamshell screen is so much safer.

Weight. As least as heavy as my phat DS, which is too heavy.

Heat. It gets a bit warm after half an hour. Not the best weather to be testing it in though, to be fair.

Memory sticks. Again, I had to buy one seperately before it could be classed as useful. Unfortunately I got a third party stick which seems to cause strange errors. For example, I can't download the LocoRoco demo using the PSP (any other files are fine, just not executables). I have to download and transfer it using a computer and usb cable. The RSS feeds don't work either. Google suggests that this is because it's not a Sony memory stick.

No homebrew.

No touchscreen. I miss it. I also want a phone with one. It makes a portable device so much more useful.

So, the loveliness of the screen is outweight by the awkwardness of everything else. Some are bad hardware and form factor decisions, but hey it's their first attempt. Maybe they'll get it right (copy Nintendo) in the next version.

But the software! I can't forgive that. The fact that things used to work but have been restricted in subsequent versions of the firmware really makes me feel trapped and restricted. I know the hardware can do it and it's frustrating that Sony are deliberately preventing me from using the PSP to it's full potential. Improve the software and it would be a much better product.

In short, I'll keep it for a few good games, but I really wouldn't recommend spending money to get one.

PS: :o

Have you seen the logitech cases like this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000A4385K ?

They're quite easy to find, and also pretty robust looking.
