http://www.phlamethrower.co.uk/riscos/deathdawn.php, obviously.

I have a fear that if I put in cultural references in names of things, etc, the game will turn into one big in-joke.

But I also have a fear that I won't be able to think up enough names for things (or ideas for missions etc.) unless I do resort to cultural references & the like. Or rather, I may end up stealing a load of ideas without really realising, when really I want to stay nice and distant.

Read this series of articles.

Cultural references are fun. That's reason enough to stick them in.

StarCraft has quite a lot - particularly in the Brood War expansion, clicking on the medic lots of times reveals phrases like "He's dead, Jim" as well as quotes from ER. It makes it more fun, and I say 'why not?'

Contact for the DS is full of contemporary (often gaming) references.

Using a single word was a bit crap of me, really. I guessed you were thinking of Deathdawn - I meant, will the cultural references fit with the context of the game in whichever way they're used? If the reference is in some way appropriate to the mission - which can just as much be the words used as the source of those words, then I see no problem.

I've done it myself - words and phrases used as room names in the old Soft Rock budget games were (mainly) taken from lyrics, for example (though due to the simple nature of the games, there was no real context to base the choices on IIRC).

That's the plan, yes. I'm just worried that I could put too many in, or make them too obvious, or make them too obscure, and end up ruining it in some way.

So long as the game still works if you don't get the reference (e.g. "He's dead, Jim") then there's no harm what so ever.

It's like watching Hot Fuzz (guess what I just got on DVD?) - there's lots of film references in there, but it's still funny watching a granny get drop-kicked in the face.

That's part of what I'm worried about, yes.

The good news is that I can't actually think of many references I want to include (suitable or otherwise), so maybe things won't be as bad as I'm fearing.

Hot Fuzz (guess what I just got on DVD?)
It seems it was on special offer in supermarkets last week, but not this week. Which means I'm off down the Amazon instead, as (a) the supermarket price is now identical, (b) It's an excuse to get something else at the same time.

Jaws?

Yes. I gather Tesco were giving away a free Yorkie bar (the big ones).

I missed this spectacular offer - but that's okay because even taking the Yorkie bar into account, it still worked out more expensive than I'm likely to pay for it.
