I'm curious.....what proportion of the DVDs you own would you say are 'movies*' you've not seen before and bought, maybe on a whim, ie. not films that you already love and want to own so that you can watch them again in the future?

I'd guesstimate that mine are probably close to 50%, probably higher.
Some of them are films I've heard of and bought because I want to see them (and spotted them in a sale) but for whatever reason haven't already.
However - and this is the reason I have so many - there are also films I've never heard of before (often straight to sell-through productions), but picked up really, really cheap; so cheap that I'm willing to take a chance that they might actually be watchable. |

*the word still makes me shudder a little... That word doesn't bother me at all. It is after all more generic - 'film' is now almost an anachronism, since it refers to a particular technology. But the naming scheme behind it does annoy me a little. What would you call art-house projects like 'Blue'? Stationaries?
Anyway, your question is a good one. I buy DVDs either because I desperately, really, really want to see them, or because I've seen it before and loved it - and also thought I'd watch it again more than once. Either way, it has to be pretty cheap or I'll just put off getting it. I can't really say what the proportion is, but there's not been much I've been that bothered about since DVDs became available - so the proportion is probably well over 50% seen-before. If you buy a series or something like that does that count? The last DVD I got is the complete Trapdoor : brilliant! And what if you buy a paper to get a free DVD, do they count? I'd do that more if I could remember things from one day to the next. |

About 25-50%, I guess. Maybe more, but I can't be bothered to count. After having just checked, out of the DVDs that are movies, 95% of them are movies that I hadn't seen before. Of course they are mostly things that I've selected because there's a good chance that I'll like them (i.e. it's a sequel to something I've already seen, or it's just something that sounds like something I'd like), but 95% of them are definitely things that I've first (and in most cases only) seen on DVD.
I'm not the kind of person who watches the same film 10,000 times, so if I've seen a film on TV (and haven't bothered recording it) then it would have to be very special to make it onto the pre-watched DVD list.
Out of the non-movie DVDs (i.e. TV boxsets) it's about 50% pre-watched, but that number is likely to increase in future as I'd be more inclined to buy a DVD of something that I haven't seen instead of one of something that I have.

Thanks to those who responded. I'm frankly embarrassed by the number of DVDs that I've bought, either because they're very cheap (Tesco is especially guilty here!) or out of boredom, and am pretty sure I'll not watch again.
The marketing for DVDs was originally, and seems still to be, "Own it on DVD now" as though it's something you'll already have seen and will want to watch again and again, yet retail prices for discs that are not new releases make them almost consumable. I guess that's the intention, and the reason that the discs are so obviously cheap to manufacture, yet fragile.
It's a poor medium for the few films that we truly love and actually do wish to watch again and again.... :-/ |
