It's been over 10 years since I last programmed on the Archimedes, and I'm looking forward to restarting it with the Pi, as I have a few game ideas to program...

Is there a 3D engine available nowadays ?

There was mention of the TAG32 engine a while back. There is a bit of info at http://www.tbasoftware.co.uk/2011_05_01_archive.html

Perhaps you could work with Chris and Franck to port a simple one that is SDL based (there must be a few out there that aren't OpenGL-based/hardware-acceleration-required), to give a starting point?

Without some sort of hardware accelerated rendering backend I expect anything ported would be hideously slow.

There's some software rendered OpenGL demos at http://www.cgransden.co.uk/opengl . Try the spinning dragon one to give an idea how slow things go without hardware acceleration.
