Try:

Menu on the Fredco Iconbar icon, select 'choices'. Then choose 'Files and cache' and have a play with the passwords file stuff...

That probably won't help much, and you've probably fixed it by now.

Did it used to work OK?

Unregistered user Make sure you're visiting http://www.iconbar.com/ and not just http://iconbar.com/ - I find the cookies don't work with the latter.

Matthew

Unregistered user Has anyone noticed this? It's still the same - no-one viewing the site at iconbar.co.uk or riscos.me.uk can log in to the forum, and iconbar.com (no www.) doesn't work in browsers that correctly follow the specification (e.g. Oregano).

ATB,
Matthew

Unregistered user I've added that to my list. I'll try and remember to fix that when I get back to a decent computer & connection on Thurs.

You should be setting a domain of just "iconbar.com" which would work properly at both iconbar.com and www.iconbar.com, and setting iconbar.co.uk for iconbar.co.uk.

Right, I've just remembered why I was using '.iconbar.com' originally. It's explained more in the PHP manual entry for setcookie(), but for some reason you need to include two periods in the domain you set for cookies, so 'iconbar.com' only contains one. I don't want to change it if it'll fix the problem in some browsers and break it in others...

Unregistered user Speaking of which, cookies don't work well in cases like this, e.g. everyone logs in to .iconbar.com (that's anything.iconbar.com) so the cookies go to www.iconbar.com, banners.iconbar.com etc. which isn't exactly brilliant, why not either set the cookies to only www.iconbar.com, or get rid of the rather superfluous non-www aliases, so you have to put www on the start; www.iconbar.com and www.*.iconbar.com etc.

Unregistered user People should be able to access the site with or without the 'www', and the cookies should work on both; but I agree the situation isn't ideal at the moment.

It also says, "regarding the two dots issue" (the comment posted at 15-Apr-2001 11:03), says if you don't specify a domain at all, it seems to work (as then the cookie is set for the current domain, whatever that is).

Matthew

Unregistered user Yes, the icon bar site works fine, what I mean is that the cookies are going too far - browsers think that banners.iconbar.com is another server like www.iconbar.com so it sends the cookies there too, because the cookies have been set to go to all something.iconbar.com. If it was all forced to have www (i.e. www.banners.iconbar.com) then it'd fix that security flaw, or by making the cookies stick to their server, only www.iconbar.com. As it is, I can write a little script to collect everyone's iconbar user name and password, as can everyone else who operates an iconbar.com subsite.

Cookies work by domain (at least, ours do),

No they don't. I've just checked and I am right. smile

When you log on (at whichever site), the IconBar sends three cookies, each with a domain ".iconbar.com". Oregano appears to honour this exactly, ie. it won't return those cookies ever to iconbar.com, as that doesn't have the "." at the start. It will work for www.iconbar.com obviously. IE sends .iconbar.com cookies back to iconbar.com; this appears to be against the standard, but it does it. <shrug>

You should be setting a domain of just "iconbar.com" which would work properly at both iconbar.com and www.iconbar.com, and setting iconbar.co.uk for iconbar.co.uk. Currently no-one can log in at (www.)iconbar.co.uk, and only broken cookie browsers can log in at iconbar.com

ATB,
Matthew

Unregistered user Cookies work by domain (at least, ours do), so iconbar.com cookies won't work for www.iconbar.com or www.iconbar.co.uk.

If you stay in the same domain it's fine; but if one of the links is pointing to another domain it'll mess things up.

Having said that, if the links were broken it would be unlikely that other people could log in...? Basically, if you found one, let us know.

It could also be a corrupt cookies file not allowing any new entries of course smile

Unregistered user That's a good point shock, incidentally you won't be able to do that with the new forums.

It was originally setup that way because TIB had a few subdomains that used TIB's design, so we wanted the username/pass to be accessible there as well. But now we've taken on some subsite's it's become an issue.
