I'm using Red Squirrel with Risc Os 3.1. Also I.ve got Arcfs and Sparkplug, yet none of these worked opening this file.
Is there a specific program to uncompress these files, or am I missing something.

Thanks unhappy

I presume you're talking about the RISC OS ROM Images site (http://www.tribbeck.com/computers/romimages/)

What you need to do is simply click on the file using your web browser and click on the picture of the ROM - your browser will automatically work out what to do with it.

Note that there was a server misconfiguration that prevented this action which I've just fixed.

Downloading the file was NOT the problem. What I want to know is how you extract the roms, out of the .zri file.

If it's a zipped rom image I'm assuming its compressed, yet nothing recognises it!

Sorry to be a pain in the smile but I can't find any info on this at all (Even Google)..

Just do it - ***ALL*** browsers should (now) be able to work out how to decompress it, and make the ROM image available to view.

Let the browser do the work.

Then you'll understand why it's the ROM Images web site, and why I've not been silenced by lawyers because RISC OS is still under copyright, and distributing binary ROM images is illegal.

I've tried this on Explorer, Firefox and Netscape. I did get the big image of the roms displayed.

So it's pictures/scans only.

Errm - any particular reason why you tried 3 browsers to get the same effect?

As someone who has been involved in the emulation scene for nearly 10 years now, here's some advice.

1)Rename your Rom Image page to Rom "Pictures" or "Scans". You are misleading people (and google) into thinking you've got binary rom images on your webpage, when you haven't. Also there is nowhere on your page that states they're just pictures.

2)I've been messing about with this stupid .zri file for ages. It's even called a "zipped rom image" for f**k's sake, so "hey it must have roms in it, right!". Then to find out its actually just a PICTURE!!!.unhappy
I mean what the hell is wrong with JPEGS, "everyone knows what a JPEG is!" USE THEM!!

There's too many misleading websites on the Internet, the Acorn scene is the last place i'd expect to find one!

Thanks for posting in this thread. Whether you agree or not, read and understand my complaints, they are fair!!!

The web site is 100% correct - there are images of RISC OS ROMs.

"ZRI" doesn't necessarily mean "Zipped ROM Image". There's no mention of what format they are - extensions are meaningless in the web context; it's the MIME type that defines what it is.

There's two ways to identify a file format if it's something you don't know:

1) Open it in a text editor and look for clues. For the .zri files, the "JFIF" is an obvious giveaway

This is a chardump of the first 48 bytes:

00000000 |......JFIF.....H|
00000010 |.H......Photosho|
00000020 |p 3.0.8BIM......|

2) Use the Unix "file" command which tells you what it is. Doing it on one of the files:

jtrib@betty:~/>file ro200.zri
ro200.zri: JPEG image data, JFIF standard 1.02, resolution (DPI), 72 x 72

Note that since RISC OS is still under copyright, distributing binary ROM images is ILLEGAL. If you ask on comp.sys.acorn.* for ROM images, you will get the same answer - although some people may point you at my site. (The official way to run RISC OS > 3.1 on a PC is to buy VirtualRiscPC.)

In fact, have a look at http://groups.google.co.uk/group/comp.sys.acorn.misc/browse_frm/thread/aae1c4adb90dce8f/1913e1d53ca1c7e2?tvc=1

This was the thread that started this web site.

In what way?

Do you think I should change my site? Or shall I leave it as it is <inserted sub-note deleted>?

Leave it as it is, it's funny when people don't get the joke smile

Unless you've messed up the server config, that is.

I know. It would be interesting to find out when they were downloaded, and how long it took for the format to be discovered.

Unless you've messed up the server config, that is.

TBH, I think those pages started going wrong the moment that I lost the earlier server (which was running at RedBus). That's quite some time ago (no-one else has asked about it!)

Hey you guys are like the pinnacle of humour, even I didn't see that one coming. You two should get married, then you can have a double cluster f**k of comedy. The internet really wouldn't stand a chance, and would have to short curcuit itself for the safety of mankind (or rabbits). With the world evolutionarily regressed ten years, you wouldn't discreetly be able to buy "The make my penis 6 inches longer" pills. Which is also the main supplement they send to Africa as relief.

In future please give an advance warning of your humorous onslaught, so everyone has enough time to brace themselves.

Thanking you for comedy (You pair of muffs) grintonguecool
