Hi. I used to use Acorn Archemides at school years ago before they changed to PCs. I always had a bit of a softspot for them. Well I have one now but it doesnt work in any useful way. I have a Risc PC (think its a 600) with RIsc OS 4.02 ROMS fitted. I would like to get this up and running properly, it has a netwotk card, ram and a floppy disc drive (it also has a pc card). The outcome I would like is to be able to browse the internet on it, talk on the msn network (if thats possible!( and yes its msn but my friends wont change!)) and listen to some music. I am not bothered about gaming, video or much else to be honest. I think this is all possible on it because i looked at screenshots last year of risc OS machines doing just this. I am fairly good with computers, not a programmer or anything but i can setup linux, am fairly good at following instructions etc so i see no reason why it cant be possible. If I cant get this to work i see no option but to scrap the machine so come on people rally round and help save an acorn!!! Thanks! Andy |

i think that this is possible firefox is available for risc os (but you need lots of memory) - its early days for it though msn is almost certainly possible http://www.drobe.co.uk/riscos/artifact811.html was what i found when looking for it playing mp3 is also possible (you may need a strongarm though) main thing is getting the network card working... might be worth asking on iconbar.com instead of acornarcade (which is more orientated towards games) |

I am glad someone thinks its possible, i am really keen to get the acorn running and to use it. I posted at Iconbar last year and only a couple of people replied and it all came to nothing. Then university got in the way!! I do have a strongarm processor (strongarm SA-110s)and i think the ram is ample aswell. I am digging around for a small hard disk then I should be ready to go. I can boot up into Risc OS 4.02 but obvisouly its very limited. I believe that there is a CD that installs certain elements of the OS onto the hard drive allowing more things to be installed etc This is the first hurdle as I dont have the CD!!I dont think its piracy because I own the machine and the ROMs? Do you have any idea where I could get the CD? After that I can deal with the network card! Its a toss up between my card being faulty or me simply not knowing how to initiate it. Thanks Andy |

Iconbar gets read far more often than AA, which is very quiet these days. What you need to do depends on what's already on the hard disc, most importantly do you have the !Boot structure? If not, there's a CD image of it on RISC OS Ltd's website (http://www.riscos.com) in the downloads section. That might be the CD you're thinking of. |

yes i think that must be whast i am thinking of, i have downloaded it and burnt it to CD. Just need to get the CDROM drive to work! I know it actually works but i cant get it to mount itself. i think after that it should be plain sailing. From some looking at it i think the network card is dead so i will get hold of one and then i should be able to get it connected to my router and get broadband!! I noticed that Iconbar is appears to have changed from when i looked last year. I must have looked there before during a dry spell of posting.andy |
