Hi,

Now TEK's out, what do people think ?

Is it quiet round here 'cause you're all busy playing it ?

Is it going down well at Wakefield (is there much interest) ?

Max

It looked impressive but difficult to get to chat to Jan as people were crowding around him. Went back later and had a nice chat about it. I don't think anyone can complain about it but didn't have chance to play it myself.

Actually, I'm discussing it in the playpen.shock
It is a great game, but unfortunately has a few rough edges. If these get sorted out, I'd strongly reccomend it.

Thanks for the redirection to the playpen. I'd have never looked in there !

Keep away from the light ;-)

I've been watching the discussion. There's some interesting points coming up which should probably be fed back to Artex. Hopefully those that are playing it are enjoying it.

In case anyone doesn't know - there's another TEK discussion here...

Generic round up:

  • It crashes too much
  • The units behave like complete idiots (I will have to try putting them in passive/quiet mode)
  • Stationary gun turrets have unit attributes (i.e. you can tell them to patrol an area when they blatantly cannot move etc etc)
  • End of mission stats can become corrupted and turn you into a genocidal general if you get too good wink
  • Weapons fire (graphics and sound) are pretty bad. unhappy
  • Scenary and explosions are nice. smile
  • Tracking camera windows, Atlas transporter and route markers are cool cool
  • THERE IS NO PAUSE!!!! shock

Also...

  • Units can wander off the top/bottom of the screen, never to be selected again. unhappy
  • Sometimes it stops letting you build more units (even if you have enough credits).
  • Buying a unit sometimes gives you negative credits.

Well I've read all the Icon Bar stuff, and I'm just glad it's not just my version tongue but seriously, I have completed the first mission several times now and it crashed every time. It's getting a little ridiculous.

You're no doubt aware of all the problems with TEK. Here's another: I pre-ordered the game some time ago, and for all my efforts didn't get my "mystery bonus gift" unhappy I am most disappointed. Can I expect one in the near future?

The mystery gift is a printed artwork depicting some TEK units (artists impression, not icons!) in the desert.

Signed by the Artex team (and some of the R-comp guys?).

How nice tongue

If you really want one, you could always call up R-comp and ask, I bet they won't mind sending you one wink

You can use the key "A" to select all units (and "Z" to clear the selection). This feature is not mentioned in the manual.

Sometimes it stops letting you build more units (even if you have enough credits).

Buying a unit sometimes gives you negative credits.

This is what I've written in the Icon bar forum:

There seems to be a problem with the Wakefield version of TEK regarding game saving. We will fix this and release a patch within the next few days via www.artexsoft.com.

Oh, and we'll also implement a "pause" option and fix that silly "negative credits" problem on the way!

Hope that helps,
Jan

You can read my review on comp.sys.acorn.games.

Aside from the points already made, it's very good! Yes there are some downpoints but it really is a quality game. Except how on earth do you do mission 10 it's impossible! Jan, Max I'm looking in your direction:-)

Great game nontheless. The graphics are awsome!

Hey, I haven't got a free gift I want one. You never know those sig's could be worth a fortune.

Bah (!) - and I didn't even get to sign my own artwork ;-)

Actually, level 10 is my favourite level. It's certainly very hard and I haven't managed to complete it yet - although I am playing a different version of TEK to other peoples. Mind you I did complete level 6 without too many problems and without discovering any empty Dervish units, so I must have fluked that one.

As for tips, well, the most common things I try to do are:
Discover where the enemy building are.
<ii> Either build a few, very strong units and try to eliminate the factories as soon as possible or ...
<iii> Train some troops and then try to capture as many hauling plants as possible.

I, like many others, was playing with the blueprints function the other day. One of the funniest units I created was a cossack with about 6 XL engine upgrades - boy did that thing shift ;-)

Finally, there are a number of improvements I would like to see were a TEK expansion pack to be produced (TEK II?). I already have sketches for a number of new buildings, guns and units and I think a new terrain type could be introduced. I also have other ideas for general improvements, along the lines of those suggested by others (and much more). However, I'm not sure what Artex's plans are - I'll have to talk to Jan. Mind, you having known how hard he has worked over the last few months, he probably needs a decent break.

PS You mentioned in your review that you thought there might not be enough levels. IIRC Jan made some comment about producing some free extra levels, so that may go some way to combating this factor. I guess they have higher priorities ATM though.

I'd have had to actually play the game to do that rather than just start it up; and seeing as I've only just got an official review copy I'll be a wee bit busy for the next few days... wink

Hi,

A patch is now available from www.artexsoft.com to remove the crashes that some people were experiencing. It also adds a 'pause' key (P).

Cheers,
Jan
