Is it possible that this will be released now, with the arrival of the Iyonix?

I'd suspect it was highly likely as the only thing holding it back was speed.
Somebody give Mr.McEwen an Iyonix!

Hehe... if anyone feels like donating one wink

I belive RCI's priority atm is to get some of their games 32bit compatible. So I have been spending sometime with Descent 2... should be a decent upgrade (it's now faster generally, among other things) to current owners.

As for F16... I have no idea what the situation is, but I doubt much will happen until next year.

I can only imagine how amazingly fast these games will be now! :E

Descent 2 is faster on current machines, or on Iyonixes? The latter would seem obvious, if it ran, so I suppose you mean the former.

Well, I'll wait for this one to turn up and see how many bug reports I can send off this time :-)

Descent 2 is generally faster - I'm in the middle of it atm - and have at least a 50% speed improvement! On an Iyonix the speed is at least double what you get on a SA RPC - I don't have one myself I am just going by what I've been told. That was with just the basic set of changes to get it running.

I've been ironing out bugs as I've been going along - ignoring my current build which is very much WIP - it is much more solid.

All being well the improvements won't just be speed & being made mode neutral, but also some extra stuff... also as much as possible will be merged into Descent 1.

David - if you're working on conversions I assume that these kinds of games are perfectly possible on the Iyonix? The reason I ask is that I heard things like bank switching are not possible / done differently on the Iyonix.

Is it Iyonixes, Iyonii, or Iyonix (the plural as in 'one sheep' and 'two sheep')?

These kinds of games... meaning ?

Bank switching works fine, it may be simulated by the driver, but either way I've not heard of any problems with it. Put it this way Descent 1 & 2 work like most games should (except those wot access the hardware directly in dodgy ways) and thus if they work so should most games (assuming they can be emulated or made compatible).

The only prob I can think of are games that run in less than 8bit colour as I believe that is unsupported, but I'm sure that the guys writing the drivers will come up with a solution (just convert buffer each vblank or summink - sub 8bit colour games are unlikely to be processor intensive). But who uses less than 256 colours anyway smile

Thank you David just what I suspected! As if Castle would omit the capability to do bank switching!

I meant fast-action games such as Descent btw.

I still play around with BBC emulators quite a lot.

Well then maybe you can help me. Frankly it's been ten years since I last played with a BBC and, while I can still remember the basics (no pun intended), I can't for the life of me figure out the emulators. I have Castle Quest (ahhh!) as a DFS file and I really want to play it again... how? I can't seem to get it to work :-( I use !6502em or !65Host because they're the only ones I have. Maybe you could write me a step-by-step guide?

I think I have the ROM images somewhere but maybe I've lost them and just think I still have them, which is the problem. If so, would anybody be prepared to email me another emulator and ROMs?

Oh dear this is all terribly complicated, isn't it? And all because nobody was prepared to convert Castle Quest to the Archimedes...

¬

NB There's quite a lot of Acorn stuff going on eBay, StrongARM cards and everything. I've just bid a fiver for 2Mb of RAM, if I get that I reckon I'll be laughing (assuming it's not dud). Has anyone had any experience with eBay before? Am I making a terrible mistake?

It's not easy Jason and you'll need cables and adaptors if you want to do it. There used to be multilink from the Really Good Software co. but this is not guaranteed to work although I transferred most if PIAS 18 onto my A3010.
There is also !65link from John Kortink who supplies instructions on making a cable to transfer software - you'll need a soldering iron and a trip to your local electrical store.
Many PC owners have used 5.25 drives in their machines to make these disc and tape images in the first place I understand.
the challenge comes from ascribing load and execution addresses to some transferred files. They're not always transferred although the emulator can sometimes recognise them based on the loading command from a previous (recognisable) program such as a BASIC loader. That's my understanding anyway !
6502 also comes

He's talking about a DFS disk image, not a DFS disk itself, isn't he?

BeebIt works on DFS images directly. Or you can download the DFS image reader/writer which is at the bottom of the page.
