Howdy, im currently scoping out Acorn systems to buy, in particular i have my eye on a standard A3000. I'm an enthusiast on all levels, but havnt used one of thses since school about 7 years ago........need to know some things, home this is the right place smile

1)Is all standard A3000 software compatible with stronger models, i.e. A7000?

2)I see about BBC model emulators for Risc Acorn computers, how do these work.......external 5 3/4 drive?

3)Are A3000 etc disks writable on pc, i.e. is software downloadable to PC to be put on disk and used on the Acorn?

4)where is a good uk source for software, ebay seems very limited, the small library of Acorn games seems hard to obtain, is this true??

Thanks a lot!

I guess if you need the compatibility for games, but
the A3000 is very old now. Personaly I'd consider the A7000 the very minimum(plus it's reasonably cheap)

1)Is all standard A3000 software compatible with stronger models, i.e. A7000?
Yes for A7000 to StrongARM RiscPC, but not necessarily with the new Iyonix.

2)I see about BBC model emulators for Risc Acorn computers, how do these work.......external 5 3/4 drive?
Usually through disc image files, although it is possible to connect an external drive. (An A3000 won't be fast enough for BeebIt)

3)Are A3000 etc disks writable on pc, i.e. is software downloadable to PC to be put on disk and used on the Acorn?
If the A3000 has RISCOS 3.1 It includes DOSFS which will read/write 1440k dos discs.
Standard ADFS discs are not usable on PCs

4)where is a good uk source for software, ebay seems very limited, the small library of Acorn games seems hard to obtain, is this true??

CJE Micros?

You should be able to pick up a better model pretty cheap on ebay second hand or somewhere similar. An A5000 is probably just as easy to get, or even an A7000. Heck, RISC PCs are going pretty cheap these days too. For the second part, almost everything that you get on the A3000 will work (possibly with some patching) on later models.
