I've just read the 'Lander' post and the last contributor was called Iron Lord..
..I recognised the emblem / logo they had used and suddenly the memories (good and bad) came flooding back.

I can’t quite contain myself..

Why bad? I hear you cry.. Well because the game used to reduce me to near tears. I would play it for hours and feel like I was getting so so far through it until.. … ….

... .... The ASSASSIN!!!!

Please; did anybody work out how to sword fight??

Archery yes (favourite), arm-wrestling yes, assassin / sword fighting no.

The greatest problem to overcome as I remember, was that it used to take so long to get to the point in the game where an assassin would appear, that one could never realistically practice. I don’t even think that I could get the sword to do anything.

If somebody gave me the answer I would actually start playing this again! Unfinished business and all!!

Help!

Cheers.

Actually, the message poster was called filecore, but yes, I do maintain a (in fact, the only) Iron Lord site for RISC OS. You can find information on swordfighting and other things, as well as a whole bunch of maps and downloads, on my Iron Lord pages:

http://ironlord.acornarcade.com

(You'll find a post on swordfighting in the FAQ but watch out, because the links don't work. You'll have to scroll down manually. I really should get round to fixing that sometime.)

Quite the oversight.. tunnel vision I suppose.

'filecore', many many thanks, you're a legend!

The thing that annoyed me about the game was the running around at the end in a maze with a tiny view and not possibly having enough energy to complete all of them except by luck (at least I never did; perhaps if you carefully mapped them all it would be). It was a rather tedious and out of character end to an interesting game.

Yes, it was a bit. However, there's the infinite energy tweak you can apply. I do believe, though, that it is possible in normal mode. Incidentally, there are maps for all six levels of the maze on my site. I'll be redesigning that soon if I get bored enough.

It's doable if you've got a map (I've done it), so you don't waste energy on pointless searching. I very much doubt it's even possible at all on the first time you play the game, without a map, without luckily going straight to the right place every time, which is bad game design because it relies on you already knowing what's there.

Well if it makes you feel any better, I've redesigned the site in CSS (and JS).

Get used to it. You have to kill a whole bunch of assassins until... do you really want a spoiler?

SPOILER BELOW!

...you get the assassins after you visit the Templars (in the chapel) - it's kind of a test, see? Once you hack and slash your way through assassins, back to the Templars again, they'll be happy with your fighting skills and the assassins will stop. Easy.
